Parents of Otto Warmbier, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, are expected to dine at the White House with President Trump and US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell on Saturday night, CNN announced.
Warmbier was an American student who was detained for 17 months in North Korea for spying. He was returned to the United States in a comatose state in 2017 and died shortly thereafter.
It was not clear right away how the Saturday dinner was organized or if anyone else wanted to attend.
Grenell, who could replace the National Security Advisor post after John Bolton's dismissal this week, has been in Washington for the past few days, according to CNN. But this dinner was organized before the Bolton shot.
Grenell met the Warmbiers when they came to Germany in August. He posted a picture of him and his mother with Cindy Warmbier on Instagram.
"Today, I introduced Cindy's mother, Otto Warmbier, to my mother, Judi." Cindy is determined to do justice to her family – and we are ready to help, "wrote Grenell for his legend.
Trump has publicly stated that he does not hold the Kim Jong Un regime responsible for Warmbier's death, he said after his second summit with Kim in Hanoi, Vietnam, in February.
The Warmbiers, however, rejected Trump's request.
