The Phillies get started, and a prospect, for a surprisingly low cost – The Athletic

The Phillies improved a bit – and added a decent relief prospect – for a reasonable cost, sending a promising young big leaguer (Spencer Howard) to Texas along with a pair of low-probability prospects (Kevin Gowdy, Josh Gessner) to help with their rotation and the bullpen (Kyle Gibson, Ian Kennedy).

Right-hander (and avid gardener) Gibson, in his sophomore year with the Rangers, is in the middle of a breakout season at 33, though that may prove to be an illusion – his BABIP is by far the lowest of his career at .267 and he’s been exceptionally good at keeping balls flying in the park. By advanced measures he’s more like an average league starter – especially since he doesn’t have any sort of knockout pitch – but it’s good enough to help the Phillies, who have an ace in Zack Wheeler, a former ace in the home run. -Aaron Nola prone, and no other healthy starting pitcher options above the replacement level.
