KANSAS CITY – Scott Kingery is pretty much cured of the injury to the hamstring who placed him on the wounded list three weeks ago.
Kingery led the bases and took ground balls at three field positions on Friday. At this rate, he could begin a minor league reeducation mission with the Single A Lakewood on Monday, said director Gabe Kapler.
Kapler plans to use Kingery frequently at various positions when activated. In preparation for this role, Kingery will have representatives in the second, third, shorts and center of the field during his reeducation mission.
Kingery's rehabilitation mission can last up to 20 days, but it should not need much time.
"One thing that, in my opinion, is important is that we go on strike and that he come back when he feels ready and feels that his timing and pace are good rather than putting a specific number of "bat-shots," said Kapler. "I do not think you want to stretch it too long and you do not want it to be too short. We will build it sensibly with its long-term interests at the top of the strategy. "
Health matter…
• Rescue workers Tommy Hunter and David Robertson, both recovering, began their programs to launch on Friday.
"It was not bad, but it was not what I was hoping for," Robertson said. "I was hoping it would be 100% and that's not the case. It's better, but not [all the way] better."
• Rescue player Victor Arano, from elbow inflammation, reached 120 feet on Friday and could take time on a mound on Tuesday.
• In miners, Spencer Howard, a highly respected pitching prospect, stays on the IL with shoulder pains. Player Development Director Josh Bonifay said the team's doctors did not think the problem was serious.
"We just want to be careful with him," said Bonifay.
Howard had launched for Single A Clearwater. There is no official schedule for his return.
"We want to make sure it's 100%, so we'll take our time," said Bonifay.
DH Plans
Bryce Harper was the designated hitter against the Royals in the AHL Park on Friday night.
J.T. Realmuto will likely be the DH on Saturday night with Andrew Knapp getting his third straight start behind the plate with Zach Eflin. Kapler emphasized that the match was a coincidence and that he would not employ a personal seeker for his pitchers.
Realmuto should be back behind Sunday's marble with Vince Velasquez on the mound. Both were struggling to get on the same page earlier in the week in St. Louis (see the story).
"I'm excited to see how Vinny follows J.T. on his next outing," Kapler said. It is something interesting for me and for all of us. We hope this will be improved. He shook [off Realmuto] not bad last time. We will seek to improve this ratio. "
Andrew McCutchen should be the DH Sunday.
