PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Zoo and the PPG Aquarium have announced the demise of their 10-year-old African lion, Razi.
The zoo said that Razi was suffering from a form of epilepsy and that he had had a great sore crisis on Sunday. He fell into the show and fractured his jaw.
According to the zoo, Razi's guards determined that it was not in his interest to attempt the difficult surgery required to repair his broken jaw, as well as the difficult post-operative care he would need to get him back on his feet. . They also said that his foreclosure rate was increasing.
In a press release, Barbara Baker, president and CEO of Zoo, said: "It's a sad day for all of us. Our animals are like members of our family and losing a family member is difficult. Razi was a beautiful animal, and we will miss our visitors too. They developed a bond with him and his brother Ajani. "

Idiopathic epilepsy, a rare disease in lions, was diagnosed in Razi in spring 2013, zoo officials said. He was treated with anti-epileptic drugs.
Dr. Ginger Sturgeon, animal health director of the zoo, said: "Razi was an incredible cat. He allowed us to take voluntary blood samples from his tail every two months to check the serum levels of his drug and liver function. It's so hard for all of us in the zoo to lose an animal that is important to us, but we try to remember all the good memories and the positive impact it has had on our visitors.
The zoo says they keep very close contact with Razi's brother, Ajani, because the two were inseparable.
