Sony revealed this week having sold 96.8 million PlayStation 4 consoles and that its successor would not arrive before the end of 2020 at the earliest.
You may remember that Sony had revealed a year ago that PS4 sales had dropped for the first time from one year to the next. This has just happened again, but the shortfall is not so serious: Sony has sold 17.8 million PS4 during the year ended March 31, against 19 million sold the previous year.
But with 96.8 million PS4 sold in total, Sony will cross the milestone of 100 million units faster than the Nintendo Wii – this console has sold to 101.63 million units – and in line with the PS2, which sold at 155 million. The previous Sony console, the PS3, had sold only 87.4 million units.
Sony claims to sell 16 million PS4 during the current fiscal year and that its successor, the PlayStation 5, will be commercialized only during the next fiscal year, which will begin in April 2020. I imagine that it will be marketed by the 2020 sales season.
Sony also provided other precise figures. Its PlayStation Plus service has 36.4 million paying subscribers. The PlayStation Network generated $ 12.8 billion in revenue last fiscal year, a new record. Sony's gaming division generated total revenues of $ 20.9 billion during the year. And PlayStation Now, Sony's streaming service, now has more than 700,000 subscribers.
