The PlayStation reportedly reported more money in 2018 than it did during the entire PS2 period

Fiscal year 2018 was excellent for Sony and its PlayStation games division. That's great, you ask? Both have had record years in terms of profits: PlayStation has paid out USD 2.81 billion to Sony's impressive USD 8 billion total for the year. That's a lot of money for PlayStation, which generated $ 21 billion in sales over the same period, the first time it has exceeded $ 20 billion. According to PlayStation, the software and the PSN have been huge driving forces for this record year.

What makes the year more impressive, however, is a bit of context. According to Critical Hit, during the 2018 fiscal year, PlayStation has generated more profits than throughout the PS2 era, which, in terms of console sales, has been its biggest success. The total amount of profits made by the PS2 was $ 2.22 billion, which was not less than $ 2.81 billion, but much lower. Of course, this comparison says much less about the PS2 and more about the money that now wins PlayStation with the PSN.

A year as important for PlayStation could not possibly come at a better time. With the PlayStation 5 just a step away, Sony can now invest even more in its development, its commercial agreements and its marketing. This means that the success of Sony with the PS4 should have a tangible impact on the quality of service provided with the PS5.
