Porsche has already made 911 Speedsters, but none are like that. Attend the Speedster 2020, a Porsche Motorsport creation, the department behind the brilliant 911 GT3, GT3 RS and GT2 RS. Philosophically, this looks a lot like the 356 Carrera Speedsters that tore road courses around the United States in the 1950s, and that's a very good thing.

We saw this Speedster in conceptual form last year and it is now ready for production. The gas cap in the center of the trunk and the "Talbot" mirrors have disappeared, but fortunately the GT3's naturally aspirated six-speed and six-speed manual versions are still there. Now the engine has independent throttle bodies, like a GT3 R race car, for improved response and what we have to imagine, it's a gorgeous sound. It produces 502 horsepower and 346 lb-ft of torque, which is enough for the car to reach 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 192 mph.
The Speedster is based on a 991 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, although its curb weight of 3230 lbs is about 200 lbs lighter than the car it's based on. This is due to the carbon fiber: the hood, the front fenders and the distinctive double hoop back deck are all made from this fabric. The front and rear fairings are made of polyurethane, while the carbon-ceramic brakes are standard. Even the roof is operated manually to gain weight. This Speedster still weighs about 100 pounds more than a fixed-roof GT3, though. The suspension setting is basically the same as the GT3's, although the Speedster gets a unique setting for the rear-wheel steering system.

Porsche will build 1948 copies of the Speedster, the number corresponding to the year when its first road car was recorded. Unfortunately, it will not be cheap: the MSRP is $ 274,500 plus a $ 1,250 delivery fee. That's almost double the cost of a GT3 and almost as much as a GT2 RS. Orders are starting May 7th and cars are expected to start arriving at dealers by the end of this year.
