GLENDALE, Arizona >> Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt made his first appearance at camp on Saturday, wearing a back orthosis 11 days after undergoing a disc operation.
But it was another medical problem that persisted over the Dodgers and became even more troubling.
During her recovery from surgery, Honeycutt reported watching a video of the Dodgers' throwing sessions and meeting daily with Bullpen coach Mark Prior. Honeycutt also said he had spoken to Clayton Kershaw, whose throwing program had been put on hold for unspecified reasons, after coming out of a practice session on Wednesday at batting, not "feeling unwell" ".
Kershaw refused to be more specific than that. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said it was not related to Kershaw's back problems in the last three years, but he did not help further clarify the situation.
But Honeycutt said he had a "premonition" that something was bothering Kershaw and spoke to him after Wednesday's training.
"It did not sound good," said Honeycutt. "Let's hope something is wrong that day."
Kershaw has not picked up baseball since then, but the Dodgers still hope to resume their throwing program next week. Honeycutt said he hoped "the drugs he was taking and others" would help solve the problem. Dodgers officials would not answer questions about the treatment Kershaw receives.
"You know that Kersh will control everyone," Honeycutt said. "It was not like you could see something coming out of the video that would indicate that something is wrong … and you do not see anything mechanical, that's the problem. That's more, I think, what's going on inside the joint right now.
Roberts said Friday that it was "some kind of arm," Roberts said.
On Saturday, Roberts said Kershaw was "encouraged by the way his body reacts."
"For the moment, we will follow the same program and see how it feels," said Roberts. "I know from him that he feels better physically. So when the training staff decides that we can speed things up, we will do it. "
STATUS OF STAY
Short-cut Corey Seager took another step forward in his recovery from Tommy John's operation, moving from his defensive position to first and second base during Saturday's practice.
Seager had been limited to a long throw in his throwing program. On Saturday, he lined ground balls at the short stop and made a limited number of shots on the first and second shots.
He practices batting during the daily training sessions, but was not allowed to swing during the live practice sessions against the team's pitchers.
DISSEMINATION IN SPANISH
Jaime Jarrin, Hall of Fame broadcaster, began his 61st season with the Dodgers on Saturday. Jarrin plans to reduce his travels this year as Vin Scully did it later in his career. Jarrin will only travel to the cities of western Newfoundland, plus the Dodgers' trip to Boston and Philadelphia just after the All-Star break.
When Jarrin does not travel, the Dodgers do not plan Spanish-speaking broadcasters with the team. The radio comments will be a simultaneous broadcast of Pepe Yniguez and Fernando Valenzuela from the Spanish-language television program broadcast in the studio and not from the stadium.
The Dodgers were the first major league team to broadcast their full-season regular season program in Spanish, but broadcasters such as René Cardenas and Jarrin did not travel in the early years.
RETURNS IN SILVER NEST
Honeycutt intends to move to spring training after a five-hour operation to repair a damaged disc requiring the insertion of four three-inch screws in the back. Honeycutt said it tried to solve the problem of rehabilitation and physical therapy for most of the off-season. An MRI showed that this would not be enough.
"It was just something that needed to be done and had to be done now," said Honeycutt. After seeing the MRI, Dr. Robert Watkins said, "You will not be successful in crossing the season this way. "
