Nationwide, the price of regular unleaded gasoline rose 28 cents last month. In southern California, residents are particularly affected by the fact that gasoline prices have risen 54 cents in the last month in Los Angeles and Long Beach, with their average price coming down. at $ 3.89. Eyewitness News even found a gas station selling lead-free for $ 3.93.

In L.A. alone, prices increased by more than 10 cents per week.

"The problem this year, of course, lies in these unexpected closures of the fire refinery that actually shut down the gas flow," said Patrick DeHaan of Gas Buddy. "But in addition to that, we've also seen floods in the Midwest also slow the flow of ethanol from the West Coast that's mixed with this gasoline – a kind of double-whammy."

DeHaan said the situation would get worse before it improved. He expects average prices in Los Angeles to reach $ 4 a gallon this week.

"California is about to experience the highest gas prices we've seen in the last five years," DeHaan added.

The American Automobile Association has made recommendations to improve fuel consumption:

-Slow down. The faster you drive, the more fuel you consume.

-Do not use your trunk for storage. The heavier your car is, the more fuel it consumes.

-Maintain the recommended tire pressure. Low pressure reduces fuel economy and can damage tires.

-Use the air conditioning. Current air conditioners generate less drag on the engine than driving with the windows open.
