The highly anticipated PS5 should be launched early next year, but the cat may already be out of the bag.

Sony has filed a patent with the Office of Intellectual Property of the World for a mysterious "electronic device", as discovered by LetsGoDigital.

This category would cover video game consoles – and of course, the drawn gadget looks like a PlayStation.

The patent is also awarded to the famous engineer Sony Yasuhiro Ootori, who works on PlayStation design.

And that could be our first glimpse of what the Sony PS5 looks like.

The odd V-shaped design stands out clearly from Sony's current PS4 tilted case.

The picture shows a console with at least five USB ports (probably for DualShock controls), as well as a well visible disc tray.

Since these parts of the console are often hidden, they may be less obvious in the final design.

The upper part of the console seems to have big holes on all sides.

This suggests a very important cooling system – to prevent processors from overheating when rendering high resolution graphics.

Recent rumors suggest that the console will be more than twice as powerful as the PS4, cooling will be essential.

The bad news is that there is no way to know for sure whether or not it is the PS5 version.

Sony has filed hundreds of patents but does not always turn every design into a real product.

It was possible that it was one of the conceivable models that he wanted to lock – but that was rejected for a better look.

We're also potentially within a year or so of launching the PS5, so even though it's the current design, it might change before publication.

There is also a chance that this design shows the appearance of the "development" version of the PS5, used by game designers to test Sony's hardware.

Sony has already filed patents for such models, but they never reach the shelves of gaming stores.

PlayStation News – What is the history?

Here's what you need to know …

  • Sony is playing his cards against his chest for a PS4 release, so we will not have a strict confirmation for a moment. But we can guess based on the story
  • The original PlayStation launched in Europe in 1995
  • This was followed by the PlayStation 2 in 2000
  • The PlayStation 3 arrived more than five years later, in 2006
  • Then the players had to wait another seven years before the launch of the PS4 in 2013
  • Based on these dates, there is an average of six years between each new generation PlayStation
  • That would put the release date of the PS5 at some point in 2019
  • But the 2016 PlayStation 4 Pro threw a key in hand
  • The mid-generation console offered players a graphical upgrade – without releasing a whole new generation of consoles
  • This could mean that we will have to wait a bit longer for the PlayStation 5

So when can you get the PS5?

Last week, a "leaked memo" suggested that the new console be announced in February 2020.

And Sony has already confirmed that the PS5 will not come out this year.

The console maker ignored the E3 in 2019 because "they have pretty much announced all the games of this generation," according to Michael Pachter, industry observer, analyst at Wedbush Securities.

This large number of non-advertised games suggests an early announcement in 2020.

The US retailer GameStop seems to agree, expecting sales of current consoles to drop this year before the release in 2020 of new devices.

The leaks are beginning to come with information on hardware specifications, while others claim to show what the new controller might look like, and more, suggesting that the launch is indeed getting closer and closer.

Sony's slippery profits on its gaming division also mean that bean counters must be under tremendous pressure to get a new box.
