As I expected, I’ve been going back and forth between my PS5 and my Xbox Series X over the past two weeks. Spider-Man, Godfall and Destiny on PS5, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and now Immortals: Fenyx Rising on my Xbox Series X.
I initially had a better first impression of my Xbox than the PS5, due to the PS5 crashing much more frequently and some cloud saving issues. But now everything is cleared up. After a few firmware fixes, I no longer had scary crashes and my backups are where they belong. So as such, the two consoles seem roughly equivalent in performance, although PS5’s new UI continues to bother me.
However, I’m starting to feel a major difference between the consoles, and it has nothing to do with the boxes themselves.
That would be the difference between PS5’s DualSense controller and Xbox’s more regular X-series controller, which hasn’t undergone such a major transformation.
Now that I’ve stopped playing Godfall and primarily use DualSense for games like Spider-Man, Destiny, or Call of Duty, I’m really starting to enjoy it, and beyond that it’s starting to feel. pretty weird when i switch to xbox and all of a sudden the subtle differences between rumblings now mostly feel like two settings VIBRATE BIG or VIBRATE SMALL.
I’m still a little mixed about haptic resistance triggers with the DualSense. They don’t feel good in games like Godfall or Borderlands, but they are better in Destiny or Spider-Man. But the rumble, which I’ve always loved, now seems to me to be a central part of a lot of these games, and although I can ‘get used to’ it over time and sort of forget, when I switch to Xbox , it is really strange to lose these niceties.
I don’t know what the future holds for DualSense, and I wouldn’t expect a crazy detailed usage amount for this in third party games at least. But if you can feel it in a game like Destiny 2, a next-gen game that doesn’t have a next-gen patch yet and also has a big marketing deal with Microsoft, you know the controller does some things on its own. . And when you really going all out in Astro’s game room with it is wild, and I would expect at least Sony’s early board games, Horizon, God of War, Tsushima 2, etc., to become really crazy with haptics, and you can start to get a glimpse of that with Miles Morales through something as simple as texting your mom, not to mention the frenzied fights and web-swing.
In short, I’m a convert, and that’s a notable difference between two consoles that really have very, very little difference between them other than exclusive games (or lack of them). I’m not sure if DualSense is a ‘system seller’, not that the PS5 needs anything to sell it in the first place other than its mere existence, but it’s something that I really have. enjoyed it and that I notice the lack of when I play it on Xbox or PC instead.
