The PS5 was “ much bigger ” at the start

At almost 16 inches in height and over 10 inches in width, the PlayStation 5 is a very large video game console. Great, some might say. Strong. But, would you believe it was almost even bigger?

Love or hate the design, the notable chonk of the PS5 is unmistakable. According to designer Yujin Morisawa, in an interview published Monday with the Washington Post, the original designs depicted an even more colossal device.

“I knew it was going to be bigger because I know how much power there would be,” he said, “so I knew how much airflow you would need and how much space for a heat sink. . At first when I started to draw it was a lot bigger even though I didn’t know what the engineering was going to do. It’s pretty funny that engineering tells me it’s too big. So I had to reduce it a bit compared to the first drawing.

While some have compared the profile of the PS5 to The Lord of the Rings‘Barad-DUR (on top of which sits Sauron’s All-Seeing Eye), you don’t just walk into the studio and laugh at a next-gen console. Industrial design is an art form, of course, but it also has a lot of technical constraints. But, even with all those new gubbins inside, including a delightfully quiet cooling system and super-fast custom SSD – turns out Sony engineers didn’t need as much room as Morisawa did. ‘planned.

“I tried to sculpt the invisible mass between the player and the machine building,” he told the Post. “That’s how I describe it. There is something between the material and the reader, and it should be expressed. “
