Sony has begun detailing its plans for the next generation of PlayStation, which has not yet given its technical name but which will probably be PlayStation 5. One of the most important changes made by the company is the storage solution of the system, which passes standard hard drive on a custom solid state drive.

SSDs are common in laptops and mobile phones, but less so in hardware that stays in one place, such as a desktop computer or a video game console. Optical hard drives have been used throughout the history of the console, but SSDs offer some key benefits. The difference is similar to that between portable storage, like CDs and USB drives, and there are good reasons for one to almost replace the other for most people.

The main benefit, as detailed in the revealed interview, has just loaded times. Architect Mark Cerny used the example of Marvel Spider-Man. The fast travel loading screen took about 15 seconds on a PS4 Pro, but less than a second on a development kit for the PS5. Since the new hardware will be backward compatible with older games, it means that your load times will likely be reduced overall during the upgrade.

Faster loading can also mean faster rendering. Thus, games known for their speed can push more architecture and textures at a faster pace. Spider-Man was also used as an example, as the camera was sped up to show how the city could render faster.

The absence of moving parts in a semiconductor drive also usually means a less intense cooling need. Current game console owners know that games games that are particularly hardware-hungry can run the fan at high speed, creating an annoying roar. The PS5 is still a long way off and we have not seen it in action yet, but it is likely that the SSD will require less cooling and therefore reduce fan noise.
