The rare and potentially fatal infection of day care staff encourages parents to keep their unvaccinated children at home

A Nebraska child care center is asking parents of unvaccinated children to keep their children at home after one of its employees is hospitalized with a rare, airborne, life-threatening bacterium.

Bright Beginnings Daycare sent home a letter to parents on Wednesday urging them to take precautions after the staff member contracted an epiglottitis, WOWT-Omaha reported.

According to the Mayo Clinic, epiglottitis is a rare and life-threatening infection that causes swelling of the epiglottis and blocks the flow of air to the trachea. It is most often caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and can be transmitted by coughing or sneezing.

Daycare operators considered shutting down the facility for a few days but eventually decided not to do so.

"In light of this information, we had planned to close the center for the rest of the week in order to carry out a thorough cleaning, but after careful consideration, we decided that it would cause considerable hardship for our families and not will not do it. Read the letter obtained by WOWT.

"We will take the time, today and over the next few days, to thoroughly clean as much as possible while taking care of the children."

The letter then asked parents to make new arrangements for non-immune children against Hib.

The anti-Hib vaccinations in infants have made rare the contraction of epiglottitis, but the caretaker who contracted the infection was vaccinated, according to the letter.

A recent call to limit parents' ability to apply for vaccine exemptions comes as an epidemic has left more than 50 people ill in the Pacific Northwest.
