The Red Sox have designated receiver Blake Swihart for the assignment, as indicated for the first time by Evan Drellich of WEEI.com (Twitter link). In its place, Sandy Leon returns on the MLB lineup, Jon Heyman of the MLB network was the first to tweet.
Fighting out of doors, the defending champions decided to change direction. The considerations are familiar; they were weighed a few weeks ago when Leon was declared in favor of Swihart. This movement is therefore a kind of mulligan.
Swihart did not take an inspiring start with a slash .231 / .310 / .385, but it seems likely that the move was motivated primarily by the club's larger thrower issues. The Boston staff has been one of the worst baseball players so far. Although this reflects a little more than Swihart's own performance behind the parable, the organization obviously thinks that it has something to gain in this respect by moving up a gear.
Leon was concealed from Triple-A after obtaining permission to give up camp late. He does not have Swihart's abilities to attack, but he is praised for his glove and game management skills. He had teamed up with Christian Vazquez to form a defense-oriented backstop combination in recent years, but the club has chosen to give Swihart a chance to open the season after using it in a utility role last year.
This decision potentially means giving up the positive and inexpensive control inherent in Swihart's control rights. He earns $ 910K this year as a Super Two player and comes with three other campaigns eligible for arbitration. Long touted as a bat with potential impact that can line up behind the flat, these predictions have not yet materialized. After more than 626 appearances on the MLB plate, Swihart has a .255 / .314 / .365 slash.
Teams that believe in the bat could very well give Swihart a chance to run longer. This could come from a transaction or request for waiver. If no team is interested in wearing the 27-year-old player without options on his active player list and that he cancels the waivers, the Red Sox will have a chance to send him back to Triple-A.
