David Ortiz, retired icon of the Red Sox, has undergone a second surgery at a Boston hospital for injuries sustained after being shot and wounded Sunday night in a bar in the Dominican Republic as part of an attack appearing to be a targeted ambush, said the wife of the former baseball player to a statement on Tuesday.

"David arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital last night and underwent a second operation.He is stable, awake and is resting comfortably this morning in the intensive care unit where he should stay a few days," said the woman Ortiz, Tiffany Ortiz, in a report.

Ortiz, 43, was airlifted to Boston Monday night in a medical ambulance chartered by the Red Sox. He was first operated in a hospital in the Dominican Republic, where "Big Papi" was born.

Tiffany Ortiz thanked the Red Sox owner, John Henry, and his wife, Linda, as well as the team's leadership for being rallied around her husband. She also thanked Dr. Larry Ronan and his Massachusetts General staff for taking care of Ortiz.

"Finally, I want to thank everyone for the support and love we have received during this incredible difficult time," says his statement. "We ask for confidentiality when David is working on recovery."

Shortly after being shot, Ortiz was taken to the Abel Gonzalez Advanced Medicine Center in Santo Domingo, where he underwent his first surgery. Ortiz's father told reporters that the bullet had penetrated his son's back and had gone out through his abdomen.

Dr. Abel Gonzalez, who practiced the operation, said that part of the intestines and liver of Ortiz had been removed.

The shooting took place Sunday night at the Dial Bar and Lounge, a nightclub in Santo Domingo, capital of the Dominican Republic.

A man who confessed to playing a role in the shootings was identified by police as Eddy Feliz Garcia, 25 years old.

Garcia is said to have been involved in the shooting, according to Frank Félix Duran, spokesman for the Dominican Republic's National Police. Duran declined to say what the suspect had said to the police or where he was the man that we see in the video by pulling the trigger.

The police are looking for a second suspect.
