The Phillies acquired a minor league infielder CJ Chatham Red Sox in exchange for a player who will be named later, according to announcements from both teams. Right handed Victor arano was nominated for an assignment to clear a spot on the roster, the Phillies added. Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reported (via Twitter) that Chatham was probably heading to Philadelphia just before the announcement.
Chatham, 26, was the Red Sox second-round pick in 2016, when Dave Dombrowski was president of the team’s baseball operations. It seems Dombrowski, who now runs the Phillies’ baseball operations department, still strongly believes in Chatham’s skills. Chatham is yet to make his big league debut, but has spent the 2020 season at the Boston alternative training site, where he continued to build on a strong 2019 performance in senior minors. In 467 appearances between Double-A and Triple-A that year, Chatham hit .298 / .333 / .408 while recording the times at the two middle positions on the field.
Baseball America and MLB.com ranked Chatham 14th among Boston farm workers last summer. BA gives him at least a bench mark in the Majors and maybe even a passable regular option at second base. Chatham has only made 18.2% of his appearances at plate in the minor league and has an all-terrain and contact-oriented approach to plate due to a lack of power, according to these scout reports. He’s a versatile defenseman who could handle any spot on the pitch, and Chatham still has a couple of minor-league options left, giving the Phils flexible depth for the next two seasons.
From Boston’s point of view, a place was needed to make Martin perezthe new one-year contract with the team official. The Sox have yet to announce Perez’s signing, but it will happen once he passes a physical exam.
As for Arano, 25 (26 months next month), he spent the 2020 season in the Phillies’ 60-man pool, but didn’t reach the Majors. Arano was limited to just three appearances in 2019 due to elbow surgery, and he missed part of the 2018 campaign due to shoulder issues – inflammation of the rotator cuff, specifically. He made his big league debut in 2017, but still only managed to total 74 1/3 frames, largely due to injury.
Of course, Arano was also impressive when he was healthy enough to climb the hill. In these 74 2/3 innings, he claims an ERA of 2.65 and 3.38 SIERA. He also knocked out 26.3% of the hitters he faced and walked 7.6% of very manageable opponents. Arano is a fly-ball pitcher with an average fast ball speed (93.6 mph) that relies heavily on his cursor which has helped him display an impressive 16.6% hit rate in his young career. The Phils have a week to trade in Arano, release him, or put him on outright derogation.
