The redesign of the Android TV home screen “ Discover ” is being rolled out

During its lifetime, Google’s Android TV has seen two main designs that the company has built upon. Google TV is set to replace what Android TV established over the next year or so, but now Google is bringing much of that experience to current hardware. The Android TV home screen is updated with new personalized recommendations, a “Discover” tab, and more.

Starting today and rolling out over the next few weeks, Android TV devices will see an update to the home screen, which offers an experience much closer to what is seen on Google TV. This is not an exact copy, but the similarities are obvious.

The biggest change here is that, like Google TV, Android TV’s home screen is given three tabs: Home, Discover, and Apps. The main home tab (seen above) looks a lot like what Android TV already offers. It shows the sponsored row at the top with “Favorite Apps” and “Play Next” below. From there, you’ll have rows filled with app content installed on your Android TV.

Android TV also receives a new “Discover” tab, which is entirely new to the experience. This tab is most reminiscent of Google TV. Like the ‘For You’ tab on these devices, here you’ll find trending movies and TV shows in Google Search, along with personalized recommendations. As far as we can judge, however, the “Watch List” feature that makes Google TV so good isn’t anywhere here. Finally, there are app tabs, which show all installed apps as well as a link to the Google Play Store.

Google says this redesigned home screen will roll out in the United States as well as Australia, Canada, Germany and France, with more countries to follow.

This comes at an interesting time, as Google has previously said that the goal is to move current Android TV hardware to the Google TV UI over time. Yet Google had previously teased that “certain features” of the new user interface would carry over to Android TV, and it appears to be fulfilling that promise. In a way, this also acts as a stopgap for TVs and set-top boxes that won’t update in the Google TV UI as a whole.
