The city engineer who shot dead 12 people in a Virginia Beach municipal building told a supervisor that he was considering leaving his job for "personal reasons," according to his resignation letter published Monday.

Executioner DeWayne Craddock, 40, submitted the letter on Friday – the same day he opened fire at the Virginia Beach Civic Center.

In an email, Craddock – who had been working in the city's public utility for 15 years – announced that he would be leaving his job in two weeks.

"It was a pleasure to serve the city, but for personal reasons, I have to take up my duties," he wrote.

In an answer, the name of the supervisor was redacted and confirmed the date of Craddock's resignation and wished him good luck in solving his problems.

After Craddock has thanked the supervisor, the email thread has ended, offering little information on the shooter's possible motivations.

Virginia Beach City Director Dave Hansen told reporters on Sunday that Craddock had not been forced to resign or resign because he had tried unsuccessfully to take another position in the department.

At the same press conference, the city police chief, James Cervera, said the investigators had not yet determined what might have motivated the rampage.

According to Sentara Healthcare, four people injured in the shootings remained in critical condition on Monday.

Eleven of the victims were city employees. Another was an entrepreneur who had gone to the municipal center for a permit.
