As 2020 draws to a close (finally), we’re starting to see year-end lists and tributes popping up. A publication to award prizes is British GQ. However, their biggest honor, Icon of the Year, went to Star Wars sequel star John Boyega. The actor known for playing Finn took to Instagram this week to thank British GQ for honor.

It is not surprising that Boyega received this award given the hard work and activism he put into 2020. This summer Boyega made headlines after speaking at a protest. Black Lives Matter in London. During the speech the actor said, “Look, I don’t know if I’m going to have a career after this but, damn it.” This sparked a huge wave of support from directors, including his former Star wars directors Rian Johnson and JJ Abrams. Boyega also spoke of his time involved in the Star wars sequelae, not only on the treatment of his character, but also on the racism he personally experienced by simply being involved in the franchise. Just this week, Boyega revealed that he has met various filmmakers involved in the Star Wars films in the hopes of offering a glimpse of what he encountered, including a meeting with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
“So I had a phone call with Kathleen Kennedy and she showed her support verbally and we were able to have a really nice, transparent and honest conversation that is beneficial to both of us,” Boyega revealed to the BBC. “I think those kinds of conversations, you can get into the sound business like you’re just trying to save your own career, but what’s great now is that it’s a conversation everyone has.” access.”
