DENALI NATIONAL PARK, Alaska – Road crews cleared a lane from Denali National Park and Reserve, Alaska, and buses allowed approximately 300 stranded tourists to enter the park entrance safely.

Tourists were stranded on Friday following heavy rains, which caused landslides and caused excess water from a culvert that damaged the only road inside the large park.

Park spokesman Paul Ollig told The Associated Press that all stranded passengers were back at the park entrance at midnight.

"Our team did a great job in responding to multiple debris landslides along a fairly isolated stretch of road," said Erika Jostad, Denali's chief guard. "The geo-dangerous team monitored the conditions while the road crew cleaned the debris. This was a fine example of team work.

"The park staff did a great job in responding to this incident and ensuring the safety and comfort of park visitors. People from all disciplines came together to accomplish this important task safely. "

Earlier Friday, the Denali superintendent closed Denali Park Road at all traffic at Mile 30.

Similar debris flows led to traffic restrictions all day last week. The heavy rains that have continued since then have kept the road and surrounding tundra saturated with water.

Also Friday, the Alaska Railroad announced in a statement that it had halted service north of the park due to heavy rainfall that had caused erosion under a retaining wall.

Passenger and cargo services will be suspended in the region until Monday at the end of the day at the earliest, the railway said in a statement.

The railroad added that passengers traveling north or south of Denali Park on the Alaska Railroad or on an Alaska Railroad provided by Holland America / Princess or Prime Alaska Tours should wait for delays.
