The rollout of Animal Crossing Sanrio Amiibo cards was a mess

Avid Animal Crossing players hoping to get the exclusive Sanrio Amiibo cards at the Target store have been left empty-handed. Things seemed to be going well as the sale started as planned, but errors and out-of-stock alerts threw a wrench into the entire promotion.

Sanrio Animal Crossing Cards are listed as in-store pickup only, which means you must order online and then go to a Target store to claim them. The sale started at 6 a.m. PT, and the errors started almost as soon as the sale opened. Some stores displayed limited stock, but even after half an hour, stores that made payment errors still marked cards as in stock. Over the course of the day, many have moved to indicate it as exhausted.

Fans on social media and the Animal Crossing subdirectory were not happy. Many have recounted their experiences with instant sales, while at least one suggested calling your local target to put a pack of cards aside, then just go to the store – avoiding in-store pickup altogether. The product itself received an average rating of 1.6 stars at the time of publication.

Sanrio Cards have been available in Japan and Europe since 2017, in connection with Animal Crossing: New Leaf. This is the first time the card game has been released in the United States, and they unlock villagers and items themed with popular Sanrio characters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
