Samsung introduced enhanced Dex features with the Galaxy Note 10 series, allowing users to access the phone's desktop environment via a laptop and a USB cable. Now, the required Windows and Mac applications have been put online (h / t: XDA developers), allowing users to see what all this fuss is about.

The applications are available for Windows 7, Windows 10 and MacOS (10.13 or higher) and allow you to run Samsung Dex on a Windows or Mac laptop. You may be wondering why you want to run Dex on a laptop, especially when computers already offer powerful programs.

One of the main benefits of using Dex on a laptop is that you do not need to buy or carry additional peripherals, such as the mouse and keyboard. Just plug your phone into the laptop to use the touchpad and keyboard of the machine.

Another benefit of this Dex iteration is that you can quickly drag and drop files between a smartphone and a PC – you do not need to email or use cloud storage. And configuration also means that you can play many Android games on a larger screen, without having to install Bluestacks or other emulators.

XDA Also indicates that you should be able to run Linux on your laptop via this method, thus opening the door to more programs and features than running Android apps alone.

It is not known if any accessories are plugged into the USB ports of the notebook (for example, external hard drives and joysticks) can be recognized and used via Dex. It should also be noted that the ability to access Dex via a computer applies only to the Galaxy Note 10 series. Nevertheless, we are pleased to see that Samsung is providing major upgrades like this one.

Dex is also catching the attention of technical circles this week, as the Chicago Police Service has announced that it is testing this feature in its police cars. The movement will allow the police to stow their phones on a screen and keyboard mounted on the dashboard. This will allow agents to quickly access the dispatch functionality, perform background checks, upload photos / videos, etc., without a dedicated laptop.
