The Seattle Crane collapses on cars and kills four people

Two of the dead were crane operators and two in cars crushed by the crane, said Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins at a press conference.

The victims included three men and a woman, said fire department spokeswoman Lance Garland. Three other people, including a 4-month-old, were taken to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, Garland said.

The crane broke six cars when she fell, according to Scoggins.

Mayor Jenny Durkan said in a statement: "We also saw some miracles, including a mother and her young child whose car was hit by the crane but survived."

Deputy Chief of Police Eric Greening said the Seattle road, where the collapse occurred, could be closed until Sunday night.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee said in a tweet that people should "stay out of the way and allow medical staff and investigators to do their job".

Inslee called the incident a "terrible accident" and offered his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

The cause of the collapse of the crane was unclear, Mayor Durkan said in his statement: "Determining how and why this tragedy occurred will take time."
