After the season 5 finale of "Empire", showrunner Brett Mahoney candidly announced that it was not necessary for the show to advance without the character of Jussie Smollett, Jamal.
Fox Entertainment had previously announced that it was not expected that Jamal's character would return in season 6 after being out of the last episodes of season 5.
The final of the fifth season of the drama debuted Wednesday with Jamal still off screen during his honeymoon. Mahoney explained that the decision to write the series had been taken at a lucky time for his character.

As for season 6, Jamal should not be coming back soon. However, Mahoney said the authors have not yet made a decision on how best to orchestrate the character's release. He teased that the other characters will have to "step up" and fill the void.

On March 26, the Cook County Attorney's Office announced a staggering reversal that all counts of crime against Smollett were dropped and the case was sealed. Although Smollett maintains his innocence, the city of Chicago then sued Smollett for the cost of the investigation.
