‘The Simpsons’ replaces Harry Shearer with black actor to voice Dr. Hibbert – Deadline

Last June, The simpsons announced that white actors will no longer voice black characters on the show, and now Harry Shearer has been replaced by veteran voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson as Dr. Julius Hibbert, Deadline has confirmed.

Shearer has been the voice of Dr. Hibbert since the character’s debut over 30 years ago. Shearer will continue to voice his other characters, including Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner and Mr. Burns.

Fox confirmed to Deadline that last night’s “Diary Queen” episode starring Shearer as Dr. Hibbert’s voice was his last, and Richardson will reprise the character’s voice starting Sunday, February 28.

The simpsonsThe new policy followed the announcement by Family Guy veteran Mike Henry last year that he would no longer be voicing the black character of Cleveland Brown in the animated Fox hit. Hank Azaria also said last January that he would back off from voicing Native American convenience store owner Apu after being heavily criticized for it.

Richardson received a 2019 Primetime Emmy nomination for voicing the character Rosie on Netflix F is for the family. He also worked on Family Guy, American Dad !, Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bless the harts, among others.
