The United States suffer a second consecutive loss to the World Basketball Cup, their worst worst tournament in the history of their team

The American basketball team has gone to China in search of the best in the world and will return home with the worst tournament in history.

That is the reality for Americans now, assured to not finish better than seventh at the basketball World Cup after falling to Serbia 94-89 in a consolation match last night.

TVNZ reports that the worst previous result for a US men's team in major tournaments was sixth place at the 2002 world championships.

The Americans – the highest ranked team in the world – will rank seventh or eighth in China, according to the result of their consolation final against Poland on Saturday.
