The sixth round of Rafael Ortega was the difference for the Atlanta Braves in a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Things did not start well for Max Fried, who was immediately in trouble. Fried started a walk towards A.J. Pollock but immediately removed it at first. He then allowed Justin Turner and Will Smith to win consecutive singles before Cody Bellinger scored his 42nd run of the year to put Los Angeles in first place 3-0. Ronald Acuña Jr. had a glove on the Bellinger circuit, but lost the ball as his arm crashed to the top of the fence.
The Braves nearly broke through the third rookie, Tony Gonsolin, but two basic mistakes were costly. Fried opened the sleeve with a double of the center right wall. Acuña followed with her own car, which hit the top of the wall at the top right. Apparently, Fried lost track of baseball and broke late and only reached third place. Acuña was slow to leave the batting area and progressed slowly thinking the ball would leave the stadium and had to settle for a long single. He was then sent off to try to steal what would have been his 30th stolen base of the season. Gonsolin then forced Ozzie Albies to fly to the shallow left and eliminated Freddie Freeman to end the inning.
Acuña took over the defense in the top half of the inning, but was restarted between innings after a conversation with Brian Snitker in the tunnel. Adam Duvall replaced Acuña in training while Ortega moved to the center.
Atlanta finally managed to qualify for fourth place when Matt Joyce opted to leave and score a double from Adeiny Hechavarria to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
After a first run of 38 shots, Fried is content to keep the Dodgers aimless for the next four innings. He would leave after hitting the fifth goal after allowing eight hits and three runs in five innings. He walked three and hit eight.
Gonsolin was equally impressive, limiting the Braves to five hits and a four-pointer. Pedro Baez worked a scoreless fifth before giving up rookie Dustin May to sixth.
Atlanta went to work against May while Brian McCann was working on an outing and then finished second with a Joyce single. Hechavarria was then hit by a throw to charge the bases. This would bring Ortega to the plate that was debuting in the Braves uniform. Ortega fell behind in the 1-2 count, but hit a gear above 95 mph in May and brought him back to the center-right for a grand slam to place Atlanta ahead 5- 3.
Anthony Swarzak, Chris Martin, Shane Greene and Mark Melancon joined forces to score four scoreless innings, while allowing a single hit to complete the win.
Congratulations to the Braves for coming from behind and relegating the situation to Acuña to a footnote in a huge victory. Atlanta takes the series and improves to 74-52 on the season. They will enjoy a day off Monday before opening a three-game series against the Miami Marlins.
