This move is part of a broader commitment to recycling taken by the company. The US water division of Nestlé has announced plans to use recycled plastic bottles on 25% of its portfolio by 2021. By 2025, it wants to increase this amount. at 50%.
"We spent a lot of time designing these bottles to ensure efficient and cost-effective Web circulation, a value of recycling," David Tulauskas, Nestlé Waters North America Sustainability Manager, told CNN Business. "We want the bottle."
"We need more suppliers producing high quality, food grade recycled PET," Tulauskas said. He pointed out that without this demand, recyclers would stick to "downcycling" or converting recycled plastic into substandard plastic.
"They need to know that we will buy them over the long term to make sure it's worth investing in," he said. This is the technology and equipment needed to make food grade plastic from recycled materials.
