The spring water from Poland will be sold in recycled bottles

By committing to buy recycled PET, the type of plastic that Nestle (NSRGY) uses to make most bottles, it also helps stimulate demand for the material.

"We need more suppliers producing high quality, food grade recycled PET," Tulauskas said. He pointed out that without this demand, recyclers would stick to "downcycling" or converting recycled plastic into substandard plastic.

"They need to know that we will buy them over the long term to make sure it's worth investing in," he said. This is the technology and equipment needed to make food grade plastic from recycled materials.

Nestlé is also exploring other ways to make their products greener, he added. PepsiCo (DYNAMISM) and Danone (DANOY) in a research consortium designed to develop packages based on renewable and sustainable resources.
