Tesla apparently still offers the standard Model Y lineup, which was removed from the online configurator over the weekend, as an ‘off the menu’ item.
The reason behind the withdrawal is apparently that Elon Musk doesn’t like the range of the electric SUV.
As we reported yesterday, Tesla has removed the standard Model Y lineup from its online configurator.
The decision was confusing as it came just days after slashing the price of the already cheapest version of the Model Y, which itself came out just over a month ago.
As usual, Tesla did not communicate the change and we were unsure if the vehicle had been completely canceled or if the automaker had simply stopped taking orders.
But CEO Elon Musk has now commented on the situation via Twitter, where he said the vehicle can still be ordered ‘off the menu’, but he believes the range is too short:
“It’s still available off the menu, but I don’t think the lineup, in many driving conditions, still meets Tesla’s standard of excellence.”
The Model Y version was originally announced when the electric SUV was unveiled in 2019, but Musk said Tesla would not produce the standard lineup because he said the range would be “unacceptable” within 250 miles.
That’s why it was surprising that Tesla launched the vehicle in January with a range of 244 miles, but now it looks like Tesla is pulling out of the bandwagon.
Tesla is known to have a few “off the menu” items that are not listed on their online configurators, but these are usually removed.
After launching the standard Model 3 range at $ 35,000, Tesla quickly left the menu and recently we reported that Tesla had stopped selling the version along with the updated Model 3 version.

Tesla has always been difficult to follow when it comes to pricing and versions, but it’s a whole new level.
Personally, I think 244 miles of range is fine. Many people would be happy with that at $ 40,000 before the incentives, especially in places with mild climates.
In colder climates, it might be worth paying the extra $ 6,000 to get a bigger battery and two motors.
In general, I’m not a fan of a vehicle with too many trim options, but that’s obviously not the case with the Model Y with two “official” options at this time.
I think he could definitely use a standard range option and preferably not off the menu.
