DENVER – The Broncos are still three weeks away from their first game in the regular season, but their first-team defense seemed in good shape for the mid-season in Monday's game against the 49ers.
The 49ers started the game with the ball and, after taking a first goal on the ground, the Broncos' defense was reduced. Bradley Chubb put pressure on Jimmy Garoppolo on a total of 6 points on the 41-meter line from San Francisco and Isaac Yiadom intercepted the pass.
The Denver defense forced third in a row over the 49ers. De'Vante Bausby nearly intercepted another pass from Garoppolo in San Francisco's second try, while Shelby Harris recorded a tackle to defeat to help postpone the Niners' third possession.
Garoppolo, 1-in-6 for 0 yards and a quarterback rating of 0.0, came out after three drives.
Chubb again made his presence felt on the first record of the second quarter when he sacked reserve quarterback J.J. Beathard. The 49ers have recovered the fumble. The starting defense is out of play after the game.
The starting offense of the Broncos only capitalized once on the defense's performance. Following Yiadom's interception, Denver made two first attempts to reach San Francisco's 11-meter line. The Broncos shot stopped from there and kicker Brandon McManus hit in a 31-yard field goal.
Joe Flacco, who scored 7 goals out of 11 for 59 yards, nearly inspired the Broncos to play another big game. In the third and 14th of the 48th inning of Denver, Flacco found Emmanuel Sanders for a 45-yard gain on the left sideline. A penalty of maintenance, however, canceled the game. Flacco played three times and came out after the first quarter.
Sanders finished with a goal for 5 yards and one for 19 yards in his first game since his injury to Achilles in December.
"A lot of things felt good," Flacco told ESPN during the match. "It was good to go out. I felt that I had several different situations, that I was doing third tries, that I had to pick up speed, that I rushed a bit and that I had to lose one. I wish we had a little more of our game running. I would like us not to have committed some of these penalties. I think that without these elements, we can be quite optimistic about how we acted tonight. Myself, I had the impression that there were a lot of good things. I felt like I had a good job with [WR] Emmanuel [Sanders]I think it was a big key for this week. I am excited about how things have gone. We just have to clean up some of those things that we ruined. "
All Denver starters did not play Monday night. Yiadom replaced Bryce Callahan as cornerback and Trey Marshall replaced Kareem Jackson. Alexander Johnson started in the place of Todd Davis.
In attack, Austin Schlottman started the right guard for Ron Leary.
