The State Department has rejected at least four requests from various US embassies to fly LGBTQ pride flags during the month of June.
The US embassies in Israel, Germany, Brazil and Latvia both asked for rainbow flags on the embassy mast, and the Trump administration rejected every request, according to NBC News. Pride flags can still be posted elsewhere in each establishment.
Under President Barack Obama, embassies received general permission to fly LGBTQ pride flags throughout the month of June. The Trump administration has changed this policy and now requires each embassy to get special permission to display the flag on the flagpole of the embassy.
The openly homosexual US Ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, is leading the Trump government's campaign to decriminalize homosexuality in some 70 countries in the world where it is illegal.
"The pride flag will be on as many places as possible at the embassy," said Joseph Giordono-Scholz, spokesman for the embassy.
"The recognition by the President of the Month of Pride and his tweet encouraging our decriminalization campaign give me even more pride to once again participate in the Berlin Pride Parade, to suspend a huge banner on the side of the world. Embassy acknowledging our pride, to organize many events at the Embassy of the Gay Pride Pavilion, "said Grenell in a statement.
