Steam Link, a free application that allows players to play PC games on mobile devices, is now available for download on Apple platforms, including the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV .
The introduction of Steam Link on Apple devices is a surprise after an episode in May 2018 in which Valve, the parent company of Steam, has publicly stated that the Apple App Store has rejected the # 39, application for "commercial disputes".
Steam Link utilizes the processing power of a desktop computer or laptop to continuously stream graphics-intensive games purchased on Steam on mobile devices or set-top boxes over a home network.
Games are a major component of the Apple App Store and Steam is essentially a multiplatform app store for PC gaming. The rules of the App Store allow Apple to reject any application including an application distribution platform, but last summer, Apple updated its guidelines to allow the mirroring of services such as than Steam Link, as long as the purchases are made on the desktop.
"We would love Valve's games and services to be on iOS and AppleTV," said Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of marketing, in an email to customers last May. "Unfortunately, the review team found that the Valve iOS Steam application, as currently submitted, violated a number of rules related to user-generated content, integrated shopping , content codes, etc. "
Steam Link is available for Android users in beta version since last year. In March, Apple announced Apple Arcade, a subscription service for Apple sponsored games for iPhone and other Apple devices.
The Steam Link application requires a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network or a wired Ethernet connection. It supports the Steam controller, as well as controllers designed for iPhones and iPads, the company said in a statement.
Apple did not immediately return a request for comment. A Valve representative did not specify whether any changes had been made to the Steam Link application to ensure Apple's approval.
