The Steelers make a second round of cuts in the roster, including DB Antoine Brooks Jr.

One of the changes for all 32 NFL teams in 2021 is how teams will deal with shrinking their offseason roster. The offseason roster starts with 90 players and in the past was reduced from 90 to 75 and then from 75 to 53.

Not anymore. Now, after week 1 of the preseason, teams need to reduce their roster from 90 to 85. After week 2 of the preseason it drops from 85 to 80, and after the preseason it’s when the roster is to be set at 53 players.

Steelers fans should remember that the Hall of Fame game is considered an extra preseason game. The first official week of the preseason, or Week 1, was their Thursday night game against the Philadelphia Eagles. They continued their preseason on Saturday night when they hosted the Detroit Lions at Heinz Field in Week 2.

That said, the Steelers had to cut five players to get their 80-man league roster. Here is what was cut:

OL Aviante Collins
WR Tyler Simmons
RB Pete Warrior
LB Calvin Boundage

Relinquished / injured:
Antoine Brooks Jr.

There are really no surprises in this list, with the exception of Brooks Jr. released due to injury. Brooks was a player who received the first hit at the nickel / slot cornerback position, and his injury in the Hall of Fame game has kept him sidelined ever since. The hope was that he would return to the squad as soon as possible, but that doesn’t appear to be the case at this point.

The Steelers could very well be on the hunt for a cornerback in the days / weeks to come as they prepare for the regular season with a great need to fill the defensive side of the ball.

The Steelers now look to the Carolina Panthers this Friday night in Charlotte in week three of the NFL preseason.

In the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to BTSC for the latest news and notes regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers as they wrap up training camp, wrap up the preseason, and prepare for the 2021 regular season.
