There is no shortage of ways to consume the news in 2020, which is part of my problem. There are countless podcasts, newsletters, websites, etc. Politics and COVID-19 are domineering the news, however. Sometimes I want to read on Non-COVID –19 and political news, like what Microsoft is doing or what’s the latest from Peloton? I’ve found that one of my favorite new apps on macOS and iOS is the Stocks app.
With iOS 13 and macOS Catalina, the Stocks app has been redesigned to include curated news from Apple News. As you follow various businesses in the app, Apple News will provide you with relevant information about it as you go through your list. The stories will rely heavily on the business side of the news rather than the latest rumors about Apple, Google, Tesla, etc.
I enjoy how this app works because I can preview high level activity in the top section, but then explore my favorite businesses. When following companies, I don’t have to select which sources to follow, but Apple News manages this through the Stocks app. I will often read an article from a publication that I have never heard of or that is not on my daily reading list, so this is perfect for staying up to date without having to spend long periods of time researching various media, etc.
As Apple evolves the Stocks app in future versions of iOS and macOS, there’s one thing I’d love to see Apple do, but it would be a massive change in functionality. Why can’t I buy individual stocks through the Stocks app? I’ve used Robinhood in the past, and while the interface is easy to use, it requires me to use a second app.
Even if Apple doesn’t want to be in the brokerage business, they could create a Stocks API that would allow companies like Robinhood to connect to the Stocks app to view my current stock portfolio, allow me to buy / sell actions, etc. Apple would not process these transactions, but would use Robinhood’s API to manage the transactions. I’m sure it would require multiple levels of confirmation for the user to understand that Apple cannot support these transactions, it involves real money and the money is not FDIC insured.
Summary on the Stocks application
If you want a way to view business news while avoiding politics and COVID-19 at the same time, start spending more time in Apple’s Stock app. With the redesign of iOS 13, it has become a daily use app for me, as I learn more about the companies whose products I use and store. I would love to see Apple develop an API in the future to enable actual purchases of stock through apps like Robinhood.
