Ah, the mall: it's a dying lighthouse of 1980s consumerism, a source of inspiration for legions of crumbling photographs and movies, and now, improbably, the star of a successful TV show.
In the third season of Netflix Strange things, Hawkins, Indiana, is getting a brand new mall called Starcourt, and that's all a child with a $ 20 monthly allowance could hope for (Claire, Orange Julius, a six-room movie theater, etc.). The scenographers at Stranger Things revealed that the fictional shopping relic was not a sound stage, but a real abandoned mall on the outskirts of Atlanta called Gwinnett Place Mall. Built in 1984, the shopping center has had a difficult time, opening the way for Stranger Things production creator Chris Trujillo, who invests and transforms the space.
According to Los Angeles TimesTrujillo and his team emptied a section of the mall and recreated more than 40 stores from scratch, including an accurate map of the mall. "It was a really messy situation," he told the LA Times. "Imagine a shopping center without shops and without decoration. We had to carefully recreate the facades, all the signs, all the displays. In many cases, we had to reconfigure the architecture of the storefront because it was in poor condition or had been remodeled over the years.
