As expected, there were a lot of deaths in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad”. And while it was difficult for the fans, the team members themselves were largely out of step with most of them, with the exception of Rick Flag. But there was another death that really struck both the fans and Polka Dot Man in particular – Milton.
But let’s be honest: Polka Dot Man’s reaction was just… logical. This was how any normal human – so not Bloodpsort, and certainly not Harley Quinn – would react to seeing someone they knew get killed. Poor Milton was loyal from the moment he started leading the team around Corto Maltese, and in the end he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A heartbroken Polka Dot Man, played by David Dastmalchian, was furious with his teammates for not even registering Milton on their radars. It’s one of the funniest moments in the movie and, for Dastmalchian himself, the moment was definitely hysterical to read on the page – but it also made him very nervous.
“When I got on the Milton stage I was dying, it was so funny. I was so nervous to make it work too, because I’m not a comedy actor. Dastmalchian admitted to TheWrap. “I don’t know what kind of actor I am, to be honest. I’m just, I don’t know, I don’t understand. It’s so weird, but comedy to me. intimidates endlessly.
And yes, he’s well aware of the irony of that statement, given the comedic aspect of the “Ant-Man” movies. But, according to Dastmalchian, he actually felt a lot of pressure in these films, working alongside “one of the gods of comedy” – Paul Rudd.
“And then that Milton scene, I was like ‘oh my god, how’s that going to work out?’ And the day we shot him – as he did several times during the shoot – [director] James [Gunn] was just like, ‘Don’t do anything! Just run it like you really would, ”Dastmalchian said. “And so I got really pissed off and thought of my poor dear friend Milton, whom I met a few hours before.”
Of course, the sincerity that reigns there also highlights just how ruthless, for lack of a better term, the rest of the team is when it comes to interpersonal relationships. Certainly, everyone knows that Harley Quinn is a sociopath. It’s hard, but it makes sense that she doesn’t remember Milton.
Bloodsport, on the other hand, definitely knew who Milton was; he didn’t really care about him. He even intimidates Polka Dot Man for feeling the opposite, asking him when his “love affair” with Milton began. Bloodsport himself apparently didn’t care.
But Polka Dot Man is not like these guys. He is a caring person who suffers from PTSD because of his mother’s horrific experiences with himself and his siblings. So he actually cares about the death of someone he knew – that way he’s the most normal member of the Suicide Squad.
“I think for Abner [Krill, Polka Dot Man’s real name], he didn’t feel out of place anywhere. He’s always been a stranger and never had a friend to talk to. And life has been nothing but abject misery, suffering and depression, embarrassment, shame and isolation, ”said Dastmalchian.
“And he’s going on this mission, just because he’s optimistic that he’s going, you know, like Team One, he’s so hopeful that his brain is going to be splashed as soon as he goes on this mission, and that doesn’t happen. No. He continues to move on to the next step of the mission.
Dastmalchian continued, “And then we all go out to this club, and we get close! We have this fun night out and like Colonel Flag ruffles my hair like I’m his little brother and like I make new friends. And I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I know this amazing sense of belonging.’
“So this little bunch of us in that van, maybe for everyone just a bunch of, you know, circumstantial strangers stuck together on this shitty mission, but for Abner it’s the very first times he feels some kind of belonging. Thus, each member of this group is precious to him. And I think Milton, like anyone else who would have died in front of me, would have been incredibly devastating – except maybe The Thinker because he’s just a hole. Oh and Peacemaker, because he’s an asshole.
Rest in peace, poor Milton.
