"(It is) immoral to leave families without the very small compensation that their loved ones have earned during one of the most tragic days in American history," Fitzgerald said. "Cancer and other chronic, life-threatening diseases are a reality for firefighters and emergency response personnel, but also for their families and friends. Although money is not a substitute for aborted or negatively impacted victims' lives on September 11, it does help to alleviate the enormous burden of financial distress caused by the death or chronic injury of first responders.
