The four items symbolized good luck. The addition of a sixpence supposedly brought the bride and groom prosperity during their marriage. Traditionally, the bride would have these good-luck objects as part of her wedding day outfit or carry them with her.
Origin of 'something blue'
The "something blue" part of the rhyme supposedly brought to the bride and groom good luck but also warded off the Evil Eye.
The reason behind the color choice is not just because it rhymed. The color blue means love, purity, and fidelity, three pillars of a strong marriage. Typically, brides would wear a blue garter underneath their white wedding dress as their "something blue."
Markle's 'something blue'
HBO released a documentary about the royal family, Queen of the World, in October 2018. Markle makes an appearance in the documentary, revealing details about her wedding day.
In the scene, Markle sees her Givenchy wedding gown and veil for the first time since tying the knot in May 2018. She admires the detail on her veil, and how could she not. The veil, a 16-foot cathedral style made of silk tulle, featured hand-embroidered flowers from all over the world.
The veil's fabric was so fragile, the seamstresses who created it, had to wash their hands every half hour while adding the embroidery.
After the inflection of the seamstresses, Markle casually drops a lot of details about her wedding day outfit to the woman interviewing her for the documentary.
"Somewhere in here, there's a piece … Did you see it? The piece of blue fabric that's stitched inside? "Markle asks her.
The interviewer responds that she has not seen anything blue. Markle then reveals her "something blue" is "fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date," referring to Prince Harry.
The interviewer then says what everyone is watching the documentary undoubtedly thought at that moment: "That's about the most romantic thing I've ever heard," she tells Markle, who immediately starts giggling.
Coincidentally or not, Markle is also wearing a blue dress in the interview.
