The US-Somali model Halima Aden has just entered history as the first to wear a hijab and a burkini Illustrated SportsThe number of swimsuit signature.
The 21-year-old will appear in the May 2019 issue of the magazine with a series photographed by Yu Tsai at Watamu Beach in Kenya.
For the shoot, Aden donned a collection of colorful hijabs and burkinis – a swimsuit covering most of the body except for the hands, feet and face worn by some Muslim women.
And the pictures are absolutely beautiful.
The burkini was originally created by Australian Muslim designer Aheda Zanetti in 2016. The same year, it was the subject of a public debate in France after the authorities had banned the woman wearing Burkinis on several beaches. At the time, many Muslim women had criticized this movement for being sexist and Islamophobic.
In a video for Illustrated SportsAden called the opportunity to become a "baby burkini" for the magazine a dream come true.
"When I was growing up in the United States, I never really felt represented because I could not flip through a magazine and see a girl wearing a hijab," she said in a video on Twitter. .
Aden grew up in Kenya's Kakuma refugee camp before settling in the United States at the age of seven.
"I keep thinking [back] me in the same country was in a refugee camp, "said Aden Illustrated Sports during filming.
"Then grow up to live the American dream [and] return to Kenya and shoot for SI in the most beautiful parts of Kenya – I do not think it's a story anyone can invent. "
The innovative filming of Aden has garnered many accolades, including from models such as Gigi Hadid, Winnie Harlow and Duckie Thot, who shared this love on Twitter and Instagram.
This is not the first time that Aden enters the story. In 2016, she became the first woman to wear a hijab on stage during the Miss Minnesota USA contest, in which she was a semi-finalist.
In March, she appeared in VogueThe group's first hijabi group covers the British model Ikram Abdi Omar and Amina Adan, the first hijabi model signed with a Danish model agency.
