LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) – Developers behind a video-sharing app highly appreciated by teens have announced the award of $ 5.7 million to United States to settle federal allegations of illegal collection of personal information from children.
The Federal Trade Commission has stated that the fine imposed on the application of Musical.ly lip sync, now known as TikTok after a merger, is the largest amount collected for a case of protecting the privacy of children.
According to the FTC, the application violated the Children's Online Privacy Act, which would require their application to obtain parental consent before collecting personal information about children under 13 years of age.
TikTok now says that it is developing a separate, more child-friendly application for younger users.
