Nearly 80,000 people have invaded a temporary city in the middle of the Nevada desert to celebrate a 30-year-old tradition known as the Burning Man.

Burning Man hosted participants on its site, nicknamed Black Rock City, from last weekend for the nine-day festival. Thousands of people settled their campers and tents while they were preparing for a week of celebration and art. The celebration ends with the burning of an effigy, called "the man".

The "playa" of Black Rock City is huge. So big, in fact, that it can be seen from the space. A satellite, owned by the space technology company Maxar Technologies, captured images of the Burning Man site on the day of its reception, and the photos show how much the festival represents a production each year.
