The Tesla autopilot has stopped for a rabbit on the road taken on video, according to the owner

A Tesla owner shared a video of the dash camera showing his vehicle stopping in front of a rabbit on the road. He says the Tesla autopilot saw the animal and initiated the maneuver to avoid hitting it.

In a presentation on Tesla's latest self-driving and computer vision capabilities last month, Director of Artificial Intelligence Tesla Sr. Andrej Karpathy said he was currently working on identifying and react to the turning scenarios in the streets.

Karpathy says that they are collecting a large number of rare events from their entire fleet of camera-equipped vehicles in order to teach their autopilot system to react.

A Tesla owner claims to have witnessed the autopilot's reaction to one of these events – a rabbit crossing the road during an incident in the Tesla dashboard function:

The owner stated that the incident occurred last month with his Tesla Model S autopilot with the software update "2019.8.5 (6)" in Florida in the early hours of the morning .

He claims that the autopilot reacted in front of the rabbit before he could do it by applying the brakes and turning right, as shown on the video.

Recently, we have seen an increase in the number of Tesla owners reporting that the autopilot was performing impressive maneuvers to protect them from accidents.

A Tesla owner, model 3, said that "the autopilot saved his life" by narrowly avoiding the highway. Another similar incident was also filmed a few months ago.

Two weeks ago, a Tesla owner claimed that the autopilot had saved his family from an accident that occurred in a near-accident caught on video.

Electrek's Take

I really hope all these awesome autopilot reactions are true.

When I write that the owners "claim" that these maneuvers were done by the autopilot, I do not necessarily mean that they could lie about it, but just like the people who claim that the pilot automatic is responsible for some accidents, things could be misinterpreted in the other way and we should be careful about it.

It would be surprising if the autopilot could detect a small obstacle like a rabbit and react to it.

I would like to see a very green autopilot visualization video with this sequence to see if or how the system actually detects the rabbit. It would be awesome crazy.
