BATON ROUGE, La. – Junior Right-Handed Landon Marceaux fired one of career-best 10 strikeouts on Saturday night to lead the 11th LSU to a 14-0 win over Nicholls at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
Earlier on Saturday, the Tigers beat Youngstown State, 5-3, on a scoreless two-run homerun per second baseman Cade Doughty.
LSU improved to 6-1 with both wins, and the Tigers have won five straight games. Youngstown State fell to 1-6 and Nicholls fell to 2-3 with Saturday’s losses.
LSU returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when the Tigers play host to Nicholls again at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
“It was a long day today, but a good day,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We had a very emotional win in Game 1, and you’re still worried about disappointment after a game like this, but we came out like gangbusters in Game 2. Landon Marceaux set the tone and pitched exceptionally all night, and we hit a few home runs that gave us a quick lead against a pitcher who beat us last year.
“With the prevailing wind, there was more of a hitting environment here today, and we took advantage of that. I really like the way the midpoint of our order is forming right now, (right-handed) Dylan crews is an intimidating force at the top of the roster, and our hitters swing with a lot of confidence. “
Marceaux (1-0) worked six innings against the Colonels, allowing no runs on two goalless hits and 10 strikeouts.
Nicholls starter Tyler Theriot (0-1) was charged with the loss, as he gave up six runs on six hits with three goals and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
The shutout was LSU’s first since a 2-0 victory over southern Alabama on April 3, 2019.
LSU had four home runs in the game, including two by junior shortstop Drew white. Crews and third baseman Jordan thompson also made a homerun to punctuate the Tigers’ 13-stroke attack and the center of the field Brody Drost had three hits, including a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
DH Cade Beloso added a double and three RBIs, and a catcher Alex Milazzo produces a double at two points.
LSU entered the bottom of the ninth inning of Saturday’s game opener tied 3-3 with Youngstown State. With one out, Crews was hit by a pitch, and after the first goal Tre ‘Morgan stolen, Crews moved up to third on a failed pick-off attempt by YSU reliever Gary Clift.
Doughty followed with a blast over the left field fence 2-2 to give the Tigers the win. It was LSU’s first victory since a 4-3 victory over Auburn at the SEC tournament on May 23, 2019.
LSU won a scoreless homerun match for the first time since February 16, 2019, against the Army when Cade Beloso hit a winning dinger in the bottom of the ninth.
LSU relief Alex brady (1-0) took the win, as he shut out Youngstown State early in the ninth inning, recording two strikeouts. Clift (0-1) absorbed the loss after clearing Doughty’s home run.
