The track and field events at next year's Summer Olympics in Tokyo will feature new incremental increments to help viewers track what's going on during a race. In a new video, Intel previews sequences with inlays identifying the names and speeds of the best runners. A trail of color also appears behind them, apparently showing their speeds at different points on the track. You can see in the GIF above how the colors seem to change gradually depending on the speed.
The technology is called 3DAT or 3D Athlete Tracking. Intel says it works "in near real time", relying on AI and computer vision, allowing broadcasters to add it live.
It seems that technology can do more than what is shown here. Yiannis Exarchos, executive director of Olympic Channel Services, said it would be used to help viewers understand the different phases of the sprint events during the track and field event. Technology is also able to understand "the shape and movement of athletes" and Exarchos says this will result in new "information" on Olympic competitions for viewers.
Intel has developed an extensive partnership to provide technology for the Olympics beyond the overlay features. Its processors also equip a facial recognition system designed to identify more than 300,000 people during games. As in 2018, it also offers more promising virtual reality shows, including opening and closing ceremonies and track and field events.
