Our first look at The politicianRyan Murphy's first show as part of a massive contract with Netflix is here. Judging by the trailer, we're about to Joy– as a dose of small high school politics with more than a pinch of threat and blood, while a presidential run at school apparently becomes a life or death.
Ben Platt, star of Broadway, in the role of Peyton Hobart, a high school student who "knows" that he will one day be president of the United States, The politician sees him entering the world of school politics with ruthless determination – and then anger when it was revealed that his running mate (Zoey Deutch) had used a homosexual insult ("a lacrosse cutter") in a journalist. As the competition warms up, Peyton refuses to lose – he is pushed by his close mother (Gwyneth Paltrow), even as the mother of his former running contender (Jessica Lange) threatens him.
Essentially, the show looks like a mix between Joy and Election, the classic cult movie of 1999 starring Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick. Blood, ambulances and an EDM remix of the Charli XCX "Trophy" abound.
The cast also includes Bette Midler, Judith Light, Jan Jones, Bob Balaban and 13 reasons whyDylan McDermott.
The politician is the first of Murphy's five-year, $ 300-million Netflix shows, and is expected to follow Hobart throughout his political career, each season being devoted to a different electoral race. The show joins many of Murphy's current broadcasts, including American horror story, History of American crime, Quarrel, pose and 9-1-1.
The politicianThe first season will air on Netflix on September 27th. Watch the trailer below.
