The Federal Bureau of Investigation released Wednesday a correspondence file containing the results of tests on an alleged tissue sample of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch – a so-called human creature sporadically resembling a wandering in northern nature -wests peaceful.
The 22-page file, made public following a request for Freedom of Information Act, showed that the FBI had agreed to test a hair sample "attached to a small piece of skin" obtained and submitted by the Bigfoot Information Center, based in Oregon.
The letters show that the group sent the sample after a 1975 report in the "Washington Environmental Atlas" referring to tests done by the FBI's laboratory "in relation to the Bigfoot phenomenon".
"Do you want to clarify, once and for all, inform us if the FBI has examined hair that might be those of a Bigfoot; when that took place; if it has occurred what are the results of the analysis, "wrote Peter Byrne, director of the Bigfoot information center, in a letter to the office. "Please, understand that our research here is serious."
The FBI said that it had no trace of such tests.

But in a subsequent letter to Byrne on December 15, 1976, Jay Cochran Jr., deputy director of the FBI's Scientific and Technical Services Division, told him to send the sample to the FBI's Washington laboratory.
"The FBI lab is mainly examining material evidence for law enforcement in criminal investigations," wrote Cochran. "Sometimes, on a case-by-case basis, in the interest of research and scientific investigation, we make exceptions to this general policy. With this understanding, we will examine the hair and tissues mentioned in your letter. "
Three months later, the FBI reported on the results of its tests.
"The hair is from the deer family," wrote Cochran.
