After years of coming and going, planning and negotiating, the much anticipated TWA Hotel finally opened Wednesday at JFK International Airport in New York.
The project transformed the iconic TWA Flight Center from Eero Saarinen – the main transatlantic hub for Trans World Airlines until the closure of its business in 2001. The original building, adjacent to the new construction of JFK Terminal 5, is a New York City and a living artifact of the so-called "golden age" of air travel.
While the hotel is officially open and most of its 512 rooms and suites are ready to welcome their guests, promoters are still completing work in public spaces, installing items in kitchens and dining rooms, finalizing the pool and installing the furniture.
Despite everything, the hotel is already an impressive sight. With a retro style, themed restaurants and a pool that promises to make aviation fans pass on to kids and adults, it's worth the visit the next time you arrive at JFK.
