When it comes to sorting out the details, Cancellation had more ground to cover in Sunday’s series final than one of Grace Fraser’s evening marathon rides. Top of HBO’s To-Do List: Who Killed Elena Alves? Coming in a second: How many pieces from Grace Fraser’s famous 2020-2021 winter coat collection will appear during the 70-minute swan song?
The answer to the second question is two. Or maybe three? I lost count. The answer to the first question, meanwhile, is… Jonathan freakin ‘Fraser ?!
Yes, that was Hugh Grant’s prime suspect – and do not Lily Rabe’s Sylvia, as most TVLine readers mistakenly guessed – who committed the heinous crime at the center of the six-episode thriller.
Of course, a bunch of banana stuff happened before the big reveal, starting with the fallout of Grace (Nicole Kidman) discovering the murder weapon in her son Henry’s violin case. “The Bloody Truth” picks up where the penultimate hour left off, with a loosened-jawed Grace gripping the elusive sculpting hammer as Henry watches in terror. The child immediately claims her innocence, insisting that he found her inside the outdoor barracks at the family’s beach house. And he hid it to protect his father.
Jonathan denies everything (for the umpteenth time), claiming that Elena’s husband, Fernando, planted the gun in an attempt to trap him. He goes further so far as to suggest that perhaps Henry was in possession of the hammer because he killed Elena, especially after learning that her son had put the evidence in a dishwasher twice. The mere suggestion infuriates Grace – and Henri.
Jonathan’s attorney, Haley, recommends everyone keep their traps closed about the hammer, as it will essentially be “game over” for Jonathan if the word comes out.
The next day, Jonathan takes the stand in his murder trial. He charmingly maintains his innocence and explains that he really loved Elena. In addition, his son, Miguel, was like a son to him. He would never do any harm to any of them. And the reason why he fled the city the next day? He panicked.
However, while being cross-examined by the prosecution, Jonathan is unable to explain why he wore the suit he wore that night to the dry cleaners.
During a break in the trial, Grace asks BFF Sylvia to join her on one of her famous walks, during which she asks her best friend for a favor, which we are not immediately aware of (although we are led to believe that she might have something to do with her secrets revealing to the prosecution in an effort to seal Jonathan’s fate).
Back at the trial, Haley calls Miguel to the stand in an attempt to unravel her father’s alibi. She manages to do that and by amplifying the Fernando pattern. Grace later insists that she take a stand. She swears to defend Jonathan. Jonathan is delighted and Haley agrees.
Grace keeps her word first, imploring the jury that Jonathan “couldn’t have done this,” adding that he is, deep down, “a healer.” He heals children from cancer…. The idea he would take [a life] is untenable. He’s a gentle man.
During the trial, however, the prosecution makes her admit (with some audio help from her 911 call) that she feared for her life when the fugitive Jonathan showed up at their beach house. Lawyer also asks Grace to reveal damning details regarding the death of Jonathan’s sister – in particular, that he, through her ex-mother, “suffered no guilt or grief” in reaction to her role in the death. of his brother.
Basically, Grace knocks Jonathan down, with a little help from Sylvia’s loose lips. His conviction seems almost certain. And Jonathan knows it.
Moments after leaving the courtroom, Haley whispers to an indignant Jonathan that it’s her own fault – wait – do not get rid of the murder weapon. That’s when we learn that, yes, Jonathan killed Elena. And Haley was still aware of it! What is mud?!
Subsequent flashbacks to the crime confirm all of this. And his horrible.
The next day, Jonathan – who doesn’t even hide his madman now – essentially kidnaps Henry. And in the ensuing police chase, he stops the car in the middle of a bridge and briefly considers jumping. He changes his mind when he sees Grace running towards him. He was quickly handcuffed and taken as a mother and son’s copter to safety.
