Highly anticipated: The latest Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification is finally on the way. After months of deliberation and waiting, the USB Developer Forum (USB-IF, the body responsible for naming various USB systems) has finally put the finishing touches to its USB4 specification, which will update the USB architectures 3.2 and USB 2.0 existing.
The specification is based on Thunderbolt and promises to double the transfer speed of existing USB specifications. According to the USB-IF, we could see speeds going from 20 Gbps to 40 Gbps in "certified" cables. This is a significant improvement that could pave the way for a whole new wave of high-speed devices.
As USB-IF has noted in the past, speeds of 40 Gbps will allow users to connect two 4K monitors at once or easily run high-end GPUs, to name just a few use cases potential.
Although the USB4 specification is now finalized, we still have to wait for device manufacturers to create gadgets that will benefit from it. Unfortunately, this process could take a long time and we did not expect to see mainstream USB4 powered products (including monitors, thanks to USB4 hybrid data / display protocols) being marketed until the end of the day. at the beginning of 2020.
It will probably take more time for mainstream motherboards, computer cases and laptops to adopt the specification. Even now, many devices of this type still only include one or two USB 3.0 ports, not to mention USB-C or 3.2 alternatives.
